Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge specific calls made by the official, following the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
